Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has cautioned his side ahead of their trip to play Wigan Athletic, explaining that the home team have what it takes to provide a good challenge to the Reds.
The former Valencia boss hailed his Latics counterpart Roberto Martinez, and believes his fellow Spaniard has struck the right balance in his squad.
"Martinez is doing a good job," Benitez told the press, he continued: "They try to play football but they have strong players too so we have to respect them.
"They are a little bit inconsistent. They did well against Chelsea [winning at home] and after that they lost against Tottenham [9-1 at White Hart Lane] in the way they did.
"They are more or less a mix of styles. They have some physical, strong players but they also like to play with the ball on the floor.
"In football you have to win and playing nice football is not always possible. But being too physical is not always possible so to find the balance is the key.
"And they have [re-laid] the pitch and we don't know how it will be, there are a lot of things we have to consider."
The Kop boss, has been vocal about physical play, following a hard fought win over Blackburn Rovers recently, and reckons the Premier League must take adequate measures to prevent the game from becoming overly physical, whilst preserving the competitive style synonymous with English clubs.
"The Premier League is always physical and they will want to keep going in this way," he added.
"It depends on the referees in the end. We have to analyse this carefully because it's true we have too many serious injuries.
"I am a little bit worried about this, but there are people at the top who have to decide and to analyse what is best for the game.
He concluded: "We would like to play more football and sometimes it is too physical and there are too many injuries but it's not my decision." |
